Our Gospel for Dec 15. Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?

Luke 7:18b-23

At that time,
John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask,
“Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”
When the men came to the Lord, they said,
“John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask,
‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?’”
At that time Jesus cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits;
he also granted sight to many who were blind.
And Jesus said to them in reply,
“Go and tell John what you have seen and heard:
the blind regain their sight,
the lame walk,
lepers are cleansed,
the deaf hear, the dead are raised,
the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.”

When John the Baptist found out that Jesus is the Messiah, his role ends there. Jesus took over.

All due respect, humility and honor, was offered by John to Jesus and he was blessed because he didn't feel offended when Jesus continued the mission.

It was like a relay game and team work is essential to finish the mission.

In every organization whether public, government or private, there is what we call the chain of command.

There is the CEO, manager, supervisor and down the line, etc, etc.

In the gospel reading for today, Jesus is like the CEO and John is the manager. In a corporate setting, when the manager is tasked to accomplish something for the CEO for his Board of Directors meeting, he must ensure that all the credits and praises goes to the CEO and not to him. This is because the manager is paid to do his job.

In our Gospel today, it's totally different. John did not receive any compensation from Jesus but he paved the way for his coming and he accomplished his role alright. All that's working here is the trust factor and like an obedient servant, John the baptist gave way to Jesus Christ. No ifs no buts.

Most of us wants to be in the limelight. We want to be praised and given recognition but John the Baptist is different. He knows how to position himself, support the leader and look at the main goal rather than just think about his own glory.

May God bless us with humility and contentment about the different roles we portray in this world.

Amen!
