Our Gospel for Oct 25. Cure on the Sabbath.

Cure of a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath.

Luke 13:10-17
Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the sabbath.
And a woman was there who for eighteen years
had been crippled by a spirit;
she was bent over, completely incapable of standing erect.
When Jesus saw her, he called to her and said,
“Woman, you are set free of your infirmity.”
He laid his hands on her,
and she at once stood up straight and glorified God.
But the leader of the synagogue,
indignant that Jesus had cured on the sabbath,
said to the crowd in reply,
“There are six days when work should be done.
Come on those days to be cured, not on the sabbath day.”
The Lord said to him in reply, “Hypocrites!
Does not each one of you on the sabbath
untie his ox or his ass from the manger
and lead it out for watering?
This daughter of Abraham,
whom Satan has bound for eighteen years now,
ought she not to have been set free on the sabbath day
from this bondage?”
When he said this, all his adversaries were humiliated;
and the whole crowd rejoiced at all the splendid deeds done by him.

Pinagaling ni Jesus ang Babaeng Lumpo sa Araw ng Sabat

Lucas 13:10-17

The synagogue is the Jewish equivalent of a church, more or less. It is the center of the Jewish religious community: a place of prayer, study and education, social and charitable work, as well as a social center.

The leader of the synagogue, took notice of Jesus healing on the sabbath and sarcastically told the crowd to come some other day to be cured but not on sabbath which for them is a day of religious observance and abstinence from work (kept by Jews from Friday evening to Saturday evening, and by most Christians on Sunday).

Jesus reacted strongly to his statement and said that helping someone in need should not be considered work but good deed. It is also not selective and should be exercised at all time, when the need arises.

Today's gospel I believe is a challenge to all men out there. Let's ask our mother, sister, daughter and spouse, how are they doing? How are they coping up with the daily stress of life, or simply ask them if they need something from you that you may be able to help them.

Simple things of concerns like these makes a big difference in improving our relationship with the women of our lives.

I think this is the reason why Jesus chose the crippled woman as an example on today's gospel. He wanted to tell us to respect the rights of women in our society, care for them and love them.

God bless you all more than you can ever imagine.
