Peace be with you. Our Gospel for May 1, 2011

John 20:19-31

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them,
“Peace be with you.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again,
“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this,
he breathed on them and said to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
But he said to them,
“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said,
“Peace be with you.”
Then he said to Thomas,
“Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
Thomas answered and said to him,
“My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him,
“Have you come to believe because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Nagpakita si Jesus sa Kaniyang mga Alagad
Juan 20:19-31

My youngest son, Kevin and I joined the "Alay Lakad" or the penitential walk as they call it, in honor of the miraculous three centuries old image of our Lady of Peace and Good voyage, more popularly known as "Birhen ng Antipolo."

The “Alay Lakad" is a penitential walk from Quiapo Church to the Antipolo Cathedral that begins at 8 PM, on the night of April 30, and usually lasts until early morning of the following day. A mass will then be celebrated at the Antipolo Cathedral at 4AM of May 1.

Our walk from Robinson's Mall Ortigas cor EDSA to Antipolo cathedral is approximately 14 kms and it usually takes us 3 to 4 hours of walking until we reach the Antipolo church.

This time around, we started walking at 10:45PM on the night of April 30 and we reach the Antipolo church around 2:45AM the next day. It was a long, tiring, strenuous walking where all the muscles of your lower body seems to ache in all places most especially my feet.

Along the way, We did 2 to 3 stops to rest, eat and rest again. The thing is, the longer we rest the more difficult it becomes to stand up and walk again so we only do short rest and walk again.

When we reached the Antipolo cathedral premises, there we saw thousands of people literally lying on the floor, some resting, while the others are sleeping, all tired of the long walk.

Upon seeing these people lying, we also want to drop dead and rest but we opted to enter the church interior and sat on the middle aisle together with other devotees resting and waiting for the mass at 4AM.

There was a bit of delay on the arrival of the Image of Virgin Mary's procession and the mass started 5 AM instead of the usual 4AM schedule.

During the whole time, we just sat there, stretching our legs slowly and carefully once in a while as you don't want to hit the one sitting next to you as the whole place is crowded.

But as soon as the mass started and ended, we all felt a sigh of relief especially when we all applauded for the victorious and safe "Alay lakad" experience for everyone.

When we got home, both of us went to bed and slept during the whole day waking up refreshed as if nothing happened.

I am always grateful for my yougest son joining me once again in this alay lakad experience for countless number of times already, and I also believe that he also feels blessed the same way to experience this sacrifice, on his most important day. His birthday.

Happy birthday again Kebs and May God continue to bless you and your siblings more than you can ever imagine.

Peace be with you!
