Our gospel for Mar 19. Joseph did as commanded

Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24a

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ.

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.

For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”When Joseph awoke,he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.

Joseph came from the lineage of David. Who was considered the greatest king of Israel. And Joseph, was only a carpenter, seemed to pale against David. But, what makes the person of Joseph stand out?

Joseph was a silent worker, husband, and father, but was a righteous man, who was unwilling to expose Mary to shame.

But, how did this happen? Was it not because of a simple ‘yes’ of Joseph…”the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home”? And he did as the angel asked him.

A simple ‘yes’ to God…simple, but that allowed God to do what he had planned to fulfill His promise.

And come to think of it, we are all called by God to do something, and often times, it seems that what God wants for us is not what we want. But, isn’t it the same with Joseph? His intentions were very much opposite to what God wanted for him. If we were there during that time and knew of the predicament of Joseph, would we agree with Joseph? Would renounce our betrothed and exposed her to shame?

Let us all pray that no matter what God wants for each of us, no matter how different and unappealing is His will for us, we may have the grace, the desire, the strength, the courage, to say yes.
