Our Gospel for January 9. The Baptism of Jesus

Mt 3:13-17

Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan
to be baptized by him.
John tried to prevent him, saying,
“I need to be baptized by you,
and yet you are coming to me?”
Jesus said to him in reply,
“Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us
to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then he allowed him.
After Jesus was baptized,
he came up from the water and behold,
the heavens were opened for him,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and coming upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens, saying,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Binawtismuhan ni Juan si Jesus

Mateo 3:13-17

A hermit was meditating by a river when a young man interrupted him. “Master, I wish to become your disciple,” said the man. “Why?” replied the hermit. The young man thought for a moment. “Because I want to find God.” The master jumped up, grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, dragged him into the river, and plunged his head under water. After holding him there for a minute, with him kicking and struggling to free himself, the master finally pulled him up out of the river. The young man coughed up water and gasped to get his breath. When he eventually quieted down, the master spoke. “Tell me, what you wanted most of all when you were under water.” “Air!” answered the man. “Very well,” said the master. “Go home and come back to me when you want God as much as you just wanted air.”

Most of us wanted to find God in places of worship like caves, reported miracle spots, or like the young man in the story. But what some of us didn't know is that God is everywhere. In fact if you will just look closely, God is in our hearts. All you have to do is to be observant about what's happening around us and do something about it. Let's be a part of the solution and not part of the problem.

The readings of today tell us that the Baptism of Jesus was a major turning point in His life. Prior to it, we know very little of His life between age twelve and thirty. Jesus’ public life began with His Baptism of John the Baptist in the Jordan. John preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus submitted Himself entirely to His Father’s will: out of love He consented to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. Through Baptism the Christian is sacramentally assimilated to Jesus, who in His own baptism anticipates His death and resurrection. The Christian must enter into this mystery of humble repentance, to be raised with Him. Like Jesus we too have the manifestation and the mission and we have to make the choice for God. Let us accept the call and answer positively on the mission God has given us.- Fr. Eugene Lobo S.J. Rome

God bless you forever!
